A Documentary Couple Session in Holbox, Mexico
You know that movie Soul?
The one that reminds us that the meaning of life lives in the small, subtle moments happening right in front of us, every single day.
That’s exactly what Ana and Jas’s surprise proposal in Holbox felt like.
Not loud.
Not rushed.
Just present.
This was their first photo session together, and from the very beginning, something felt different.
They noticed the property cats walking around us.
They took their shoes off to feel the sand.
They said hello to people passing by on the street.
Without even realizing it, they slipped into what I call full presence mode—that rare moment where nothing else matters except what’s happening right here, right now.
No distractions. No performing for the camera. Just the two of them, connected, moving at the island’s pace.
That kind of energy makes a documentary-style session flow naturally. My job becomes less about directing and more about paying attention.
Letting the Island Lead the Way
We started at their hotel, Tierra del Mar, and slowly walked through Holbox’s sandy streets toward the beach.
At some point, we passed an abandoned house. Nothing special at first glance—just a quiet place with a forgotten front yard. But right next to it, a tropical bush with small yellow flowers was glowing in the late afternoon light, and we stopped.
Holbox is magical like that.
Even the most overlooked corners can turn into beautiful backdrops when you slow down enough to notice them. Nature always shows up—if you give it time.
Full Presence (Even When Things Get Weird)
Now, you might think I’m exaggerating when I say we were fully present.
But I’m about 90% sure that at some point I stepped barefoot on a dried turd. I immediately convinced myself it was a mango seed and kept going.
And honestly? None of us cared.
That’s the thing about moments like this—when the energy is right, nothing breaks the flow. You just keep walking, laughing, and letting the experience unfold as it wants to.
A Surprise Proposal at Sunset in Holbox
By the time we reached the beach, the light was perfect.
Somewhere in the distance, a DJ was playing a soft house cover of "Follow the Sun" by Xavier Rudd. Birds were fishing along the shore. And as the sun began to set, Jas surprised Ana with a proposal.
By then, I too, started crying behing my camera (Yes, just like Brendan Fraser in Bedazzled, I know).
It wasn’t just the proposal—it was everything around it. The music, the light . And little to nothing felt staged. Nothing felt forced.
I asked them to take their time, to soak it in for as long as they wanted... and they did.
They walked straight into the water, and just stood there together. I even lowered my camera for long stretches, just to witness what was happening.
What a Holbox Surprise Proposal Really Feels Like
A surprise proposal in Holbox doesn’t feel like a big production.
Its a slow walk. Bare feet in the sand and warm light on your skin. If we´re lucky, even great music from somewhere you can’t quite see.
It feels like remembering that life’s meaning isn’t hidden in grand gestures—but in simple, everyday moments shared with the right person.
Ana and Jas’s proposal reminded me why I photograph the way I do. Why I value presence over posing.
Why connection always matters more than perfection.
Why its worth it to stop posing, make it personal, and keep it real.
Thinking About Proposing in Holbox?
If you’re someone who loves barefoot walks, quiet beaches, soft sunsets, and being fully present in the moment—and you’re dreaming about a surprise proposal in Holbox—I’d love to hear your story.
No pressure.
No performance.
Just a conversation.
